I am looking to purchase a new bow.  The one I have now is a brazilwood that came in the violin outfit.  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what type of bow is better?  (brazilwood, pernambuco, or carbon fiber) Any suggestions will help.

Thanks,

Jen

How old is the bow you're replacing?  Be sure to keep the old one in a safe place, as old bows sometimes end up being even more valuable to a collector than an old fiddle.

I don't think there's a major difference from what the shaft is made out of, from a tonal perspective.  Wood ones tend to be more prized than carbon/graphite, though.  As for the bow hair, horse hair is definitely the best.

The bow I have now is about 6 yrs old.  I bought it and played with it almost a year then I got pregnant with my daughter.  It sat in the case for a little over 4 years.  I've only recently started playing again.  Now the hairs are starting to break off.  I guess I could get it rehaired but I don't know of anyone in my area that does that sort of thing.  Its just a cheap one; bottom of the line.  I think at shar.com it retailed for $24.  Do you think a more expensive bow will give better sound or should I just find someone to rehair it?

If you like the way the bow feels and works, there is no reason to switch to another bow. However, a rehair will likely cost between $30-$50. Check your yellow pages for music stores in your area with an experienced string instrument repairperson. You can likely purchase a new bow of similar quality (Shar is a good source) within this price range.

A better quality (and more expensive) bow can provide better tone and response if your current technique requires more than the basic bow you already have.
