I am seeking to get a wound A (440HZ) to work on my Mandocello (26" scale)  I have tried a 0.020", 0.022" and 0.024"  ball end Phosphor Bronze D'Addario and they greak around G to G#.  Are there any higher tensile core strings that can get to A?

Have you checked the nut and bridge of your instrument to make sure there's not a burr that's cutting the string?  Where along the string does it tend to break?
