Hi,

Searching through the forum I've already has an answer to one question I had about whether D'add use nickel or steel in the half rounds. I was looking at an old catalogue. However I'm now trying to decide whether to get the chromes or half rounds.

I know it's a personal choice but I'm also interested in the playability if indeed there is a difference. I'm just relearning the bass from scratch and my fingers are not that strong yet and not large too.

I've been using some roundwounds on my second hand cort artisan with the fortress bridge. The roundwounds, particularly the G and D are pretty harsh on my fingers, I also don't like finger noise and i prefer a smooth sound rather than a wiry sound.

I'm getting the bass refretted and set up properly. My bass guy recommended the D'add half rounds as he thought the flats were a bit dull, but as I said I do like a soft sound. They both come in the same guages of 45 – 100. Does this sound like a good idea for someone with small hands?

Also does anyone have any practical experience of the difference in sound between the half rounds and the chromes. Are the half rounds just as smooth regarding finger noise and do they get that little extra punch without sacrificing physical smoothness?

Any enlightenment is appreciated.

I have used both. The Halfies are pure nickel but a bit grabby when new.  This goes away with some playing time on them about a week. After these wear in they are not bright, but round, mellow, and warm.

The Chromes Start off pretty bright too, probably brighter than the Halfies but that goes away after two weeks. They are pretty much the same as the halfies in sound except with more thump.

IMO, they are about the same. The Halfies are a tad warmer not brighter. Go with the Regular lights in either set 45,65,80,100's.

They are not stiff and easy to play. Good Luck!

Terrific info just what I was after. I rarely remember my dreams but I actually dreamt that I bought a pair of flats and semis last night (which is a bit of a worry), I had the bass set up with the semis but changed them for the flats.

Just to chime in here, the 1/2 Round guitar strings are actually stainless steel, not pure nickel.  We are introducing a pure nickel electric set next week at NAMM.  Those will offer the warm vintage tone many old school players love!

I would say that the 1/2 Rounds are slightly brighter than the Chromes, but the feel is certainly different.

Our 1/2 Round bass strings are made with a pure nickel wrap wire, so this is probably why there was some confusion.

Hope all this helps!  Thanks.

I am by no means a new bass player but because I only get to play occasionally, I do suffer from the new bass player's soft, pink hands.  I play guitar often enough that fretting is not a problem, but my plucking fingers get sore quickly if I haven't played for a couple weeks.  The reason I'm weighing in here is that I find this effect much more pronounced with flats or half rounds than I do with regular round wounds.  Does anyone else find this the case?

If so, then I guess choice of strings is all about which hand you want to hurt

One more question, if I may ask...

I have looked at the Dadd string tension pdf and my eyeballs are bleeding, I can't work it out at all.

Is the string tension the same for the equivalent strings on the Half Rounds and the Flats. I'm basically wanting to know if I can swap these strings without altering the set up.

Tension is about the same, maybe a 5 lb difference overall.

This shouln't call for a neck adjustment. They are pretty close.

Rounds grind and cut, flats burn. You get callouses from both but differently. If your used to rounds flats will burn your finger tips.
