Hi all I just purchased these strings for the first time. I always just look where is says gauge and pick up 10's. well after playing for a while I realized something did not feel right when bending the g string. looking at the package the strings came it I see it indicates WD 3rd. I am assuming this means this is a different g string then on "standard" 10's??? can anyone tell me the benefits of this string? cause it seems you have to bend much harder to get to the same note...it is that then don't break as much or something? be nice I am a string newbie...

Welcome to the forums!

I'm not as familiar with this set of strings, as I stick to D'Addario Chromes.  Perhaps I can shed some light on this, anyway:

The only difference between the EXL110 and the EXL110W is the G-string.  The regular uses a plain steel .017, and the W uses a nickel-wound .018.  The wound string has less tension on it than its plain counterpart.  That would make the wound G-string a bit easier to bend, I'd assume.  It might also make it a bit less likely to break.  Tonewise, it might get a bit more sustain, but I don't know if it would get warmer or brighter.

I don't think I really answered the question.

Here's the info on the two sets:

The "G" string from a engineering prospective was never intended to be an "unwound" string.  When the trend was to play light  & ultra light strings the unwound "G" just became the norm.

Being unwound puts a lot of tensile strength instability into play, and that is why most of the time the "G" string is the one you find out of tune.

A wound "G" on the other hand having the wrap is more stabile, it als lends a more resonance to the over all sound as well.

The one thing you want to be mindful of is the "nut slot" should be widened (not deepened), this can be done with a V - shaped jewelers file.

The neck shouldn't need to be adjusted because the string tension properties are almost exact between the unwound and wound string pack.

I only use wound G packs I use:

XL 110W  .010 -.046

EJ21 .012 - .052

Good to know.  I, and others I know, always were under the impression that Gibson Les Pauls were susceptable to G strings going out of tune, but the fact that we all probably used unwould G strings makes far more sense than a design flaw with Les Pauls.

So, the next question is how pertinent is the adjustment to the nut so it can accomodate the thicker, wound string?  I'd hate to grind in to the nut, and find that I don't like the new strings and be stuck with a wide saddle and find my old G string won't sit right.

And just for the record, I use EXL115 and I suppose I'd have to switch to EXL115W's.   How dramatic would the change be tonally and in terms of adjusting my guitar?

Any advice and thoughts are appreciated and I am well aware that the are just your opinions.

Thanks.

Rawk.
