| | Hi, does anyone know what gauge is best for bending/whammying, let say up to at least 3 full steps high, without snapping the string? I'm trying to play eugene's trick bag by steve vai, but i'm having trouble reaching the last high A note which i have to bend the top string on the 24th fret. thanks |

| | Welcome to the forums! My guess would be an extra-light gauge. I actually cheat by using the Boss PS-5 Super Shifter with the optional expression pedal to get my bends and whammy effects digitally, so I can't speak from experience.

| | I second the suggestion of 8's He probably did it with 9's tho. As for the bending... Vai is known for pulling on the whammy as much as pushing so he might not only be bending the string but he might also put a bit of pull on the bar or press on the whammy bridge with his right hand a trick I used to do all the time when I had an Ibanez back then. Hope this helps,
