I've noticed that there's a "Forum Help" forum, "Share Yours & Their Music"  forum, and an "Off-Topic" forum in each of the forum sections - Drums, Guitars, Woodwinds & Brass, and Strings.  Splitting up the traffic like this isn't very useful.  Why not combine all of these into a General forum section?  This would lead to more interaction on the forum, reduce the number of total forums, and would likely increase traffic to the forums as a whole.

I'm still hoping for this idea to become a reality...

It's always difficult with forums, to know whether or not to duplicate 'general' topics... the downside with your suggestion is that people may only look in the guitar or bass or woodwind section if that;s where there interest lies. However, you're right that it might make the forums look a bit busier combining these, which can then encourage people to post more. It's worth a try!

At the moment, the majority of the users only look at the drums, guitar, or woodwind sections.  That leads to no real interation in the general forums.  If all of the general forums were combined into a "general" section at the top of all the forums, people would interact better.
