| i took my old snare (cb) and since i got the new pork pie i figured it would be fun if i took the old snare to tech lab and mess round with it. so i ended up puting 4 2 or 2.5 inch holes and 2 5/8 holes. then i painted the whole thing black and on monday or tuesday me and my art teacher are puttin a white stripe running down the middle. then im gunna paint the hardware either black or white

| Aktivguy (4/27/2008) be sure to post some pictures once you have completed it.
Please do!
with the black hardware i suppose it would just melt into the drum(visually) but with the white hardware it would to me probably look much better eventhough i'm a big fan of black hardware. but that's your decision to make.

| My first reaction is that you need a mentor in the worst way. You have a 12" Pork Pie, and a CB snare, which means you still do not have a decent "main" snare. What you have are a couple specialized snare drums. The Pork Pie is meant to be on the left, and unless you mic the thin-shelled steel snare, it will lack the projection that a main, go-to snare should have. Then again, with G2's and moongell on the toms, I doubt that projection is even in your vocabulary. For starters, get yourself a used Acrolite or Supraphonic snare drum. IMO, they are, and have been, the most versatile snare drums on the market. Actually, the thin-shelled steel snare drums do have a purpose. I have an 80's Ludwig steel snare, and it has a very unique sound in that it can be tuned to be very fat. I don't take mine on gigs, because it lacks any projection, but for in practice and rehearsals, it sounds pretty good for be-bop jazz, and for blues, because of it's low fat tone. The problem with these snare drums it that they all come with junky hardware, particularly the strainer. On my steel snare drum, I have installed a P-83 strainer. Instead of wasting all that time on cosmetics, you should have simply swapped the strainer. |
You have already demolished the shell, so it is too late, but do not paint the hardware, or anything that is chrome plated. The paint may stick for a while, but it will eventually start to chip off. |

| | I know dan doesn't like me much, but i've got to disagree about the main snare issue. I've been using a 12 inch grestch snare as my main with out any issues at all. Peoples look at me like I'm a stupid, but then they hear it, and fall in love. |

| see, the reason i bought the pork pie was the CB only had 6 lugs and was warped very baddly. The only reason i brought the CB to school is i wanted to see wat i can do with it. Also, the porkpie isnt tuned very high since its my main snare. I have it tuned somewhat low for that size.
