| ok so im sorta new at this. ive had a guitar for a while but i just sat round strumming it. never really playing it good. I am currently a drummer but my friend in band class needs a guitarist/vocalist and he new i had a guitar so i was put into the band. now i come to my questions. the current strings on my guitar are really thin, my friend suggests i get ernie balll beefy slinky because we play alot of the devil wears prada and such. i also want a new amp cuz the one i have is very bad. i was lookin at a fender frontman 212. does anyone have knowledge of these and if so please tell me some pros and cons. thanks

| | What kind of guitar have you got? Post a photo if you can, as it's always nice to see a cool axe! Do you happen to know what gauge strings are currently on your guitar? If you put on much thicker strings, you'll likely need a bridge/truss adjustment so that things don't go horribly wrong. I'm not very familiar with Ernie Ball strings, but we do have forum visitors who use them quite a bit. They might be able to give you some input. I might suggest a string set that has .011 as the thinnest string. I can help you a bit better with amps. I've tried the Fender Frontman, and it's quite good! For just $330, that's a good amp for the price. You might also want to take a look at Vox and Marshall amps in the same price range. Mesa also makes some good stuff. The key is to take your axe down to a retailer and try out as many different amps as possible, and then you'll get a good idea of what you like.

| I'm a "young fart" in my early 30s, but am also a huge fan of tubes. Tube amps tend to run a bit more expensive, but their tone is well worth the price. Fender makes some nice tube amps that you can try out and compare at your local music store. If you go with a solid state, you can always get some real tube sound from one of Electro-Harmonix' dual tube pedals.

| the Fender Frontman is NOT a tube amp. it IS a SOLID-STATE amp. and i played it, not sure if it was just the exact one i was playing but it was horrible.
