Hi,

I'm a recent Remo convert.  When I got my Tama SC Exotix it had G2's on it.  They lasted about a month before they were destroyed.  I tried a set of EC1's and I'm very happy.  It took me awhile to find a snare head I liked too.  My beef now is with the EMAD.  I have an EMAD with the Evans white kick patches.  I wore through the kick patches in no time and slightly damaged my head.  Anyway, I've had my EMAD for about 5 months.  When recording last week I heard a strange vibration on my bass.  After looking closely I realized that the plastic that holds the muffling ring on was almost completely destroyed.  It's not coming off of the head, but the part that holds the muffling ring on has broken away at the crease.  So basically the muffling ring won't stay in, but the part that's attached to the head is still stuck on there.

I'm not really happy about this happening quickly.  I really like the sound of the head, but at almost $40 a pop, I can't really afford these twice a year.  I've had the same Remo PS3 head for almost 5 years and it sounds almost as good as the EMAD.

Does anyone know if this is a problem Evans is looking into?  I'd be more than happy to send my head back for review because it's not doing me any good any more.

Well, I've had no issues with an evans head so far. My experience is limited to an HD dry on snare, G1s on 10", 12" toms and G2 on 14" tom (all as batters) but I've found evans heads to be very long lasting. Not tried them for bass, though.

My other drumset is a Steinway.

Hey man! I don't speak for Evans so don't mis-understand me here, I am only speaking as a consumer. Have you tried taking it back to the store? It sounds defective. It also sounds like you are a very heavy hitter, which is cool with me, but it does take it's toll on gear, especially heads.

I wish i could make a kick head last six months, I'm upto four on this most recent head, but thats because i haven't played my kit in two months. On a related note, playing electronic kits suck.

Hey all,

Just wanted to let everyone on DrumTalk know that we ARE aware of this issue with the EMAD bass head.  It doesn't happen often, but we've been working on a solution nonetheless.

We're launching a new version of the EMAD this January called the GMAD.  It's a cross between the EMAD and the G Plus tom/snare heads...which utilize an exclusive 12mil film as opposed to the 10mil thickness of the current EMAD and most standard 1-ply heads.  The extra film thickness will provide a bit more durability as well as more punch to the already great sound of the EMAD.  In addition to using the new film, the GMAD also utilizes an improved version of the EMAD plastic ring (the black plastic sleeve that holds the foam damping rings).  We change the profile of the ring a little to include a radius on the outside edge so that the ring won't crack under extreme conditions.

Hope this answers everyone's questions and concerns about the EMAD.  For anyone who has had this same issue, please feel free to visit the support section of the evans website and submit a complaint.  We'll happily replace any defective heads...we'll just need the old one back.

Thanks.

A wooden beater will do that.  I see nothing abnormal.
