Now on acoustics nickel is typically not used but many acoustics are already voiced so make up for the mellowness of bronze strings; but if you look at many acoustic/ electric players youll see nickel or steel strings vs. bronze it all has to do with what youre trying to do as the musician.

Windings

I had always thought that steel was about the heaviest solid metal around. Except for gold and lead which are soft and/or expensive. Its usefulness was because it was also much stronger than most anything else. I was really surprised to find that copper wire is heavier than steel wire of the same guage!

I checked this out because the phosphor bronze wound strings need about 5 pounds more tension than the brass wound strings per set to tune up to pitch.

I thought that it was a misprint on the string package, when I read that the tension needed for a nickel plated steel wound string was less than either a bronze wound or brass wound string of the same guage for the same pitch.

New strings always sound much brighter than the old ones, and I can't remember how the old ones sounded when they were new. So, I can't tell if the brass strings are brighter sounding than are the bronze ones. I have never tried using a set of NPS wound strings on my acoustic, but have used a NPS string for the g string and didn't notice much difference.

Why would a softer metal give a brighter tone on a guitar, or does it? And, why are nickel plated steel wound strings not used on acoustics? (I do know why they are best for guitars with magnetic pick-ups.)
