I'm with Dulci on this... it's good to have a sharp(ish) bend to help lock the string in place

I actually like to have a bent angle through the hole of the tuning machine, as it helps to secure the string a bit. Don't worry about it, as mentioned above in an earlier post. ;)

I would suggest not worrying about it. I own 3 guitars that I use regularly. I'm changing the strings on one or the other of them every week. It just doesn't matter. Four non-wound strings I pass the end through the shaft, wrap around and under once, and pass the end back through the shaft (to keep the string from slipping when tension is applied. For wound strings I pass the end through the shaft, wrap around once and under, and them apply tension. I find the wound strings don't slip. I cut the excess off with little wire cutters and discard.

I have a Taylor Big Baby and a Yamaha Silent Steel string guitar. In both cases, when I restring, I have a hard time getting that first wrap around the tuning peg to not bend at an angle. At Taylor they have a detailed step by step instruction about restringing, and in the illustrations the strings seem to curve effortlessly around the peg, wrapping perfectly against it. Instead, I get sort of a 45 degree first angled wrap, then have trouble getting the strings to sort of line up in neat rows in their successive wraps.

Maybe it just takes practice, but any tips would be appreciated. :)
