I bought a box and no reed was good playing.

The RICO reeds are not bad for that money , even if in each box of 10 you have 2 or 3 unplayble reeds. It's the same with the Vandoren.

For me the best reeds are the Alexander Superial. Since I use them I must admit that I never had 1 reed which was unplayable or needed to be adjusted. Chance or quality ?

Don't know. But I was lucky either in alto and tenor sax.

RE: reeds

Perhaps it all depends on your climate. He said he was used to playing in extremely humid places which affects the tone and the longevity of the reed. personal preference also has something to do with it. You may not want to take someone elses word for it unless you have the same conditions.

Shawn

RE: reeds
webfted (7/14/2005)
these reeds ya'll sent me as a "replacement" were just as AWFULL as the ones I bought. I still won't reccomend them to anyone.
Did you ever consider that either A) The back of the reed is warped or B) The table on your mouthpiece is uneven?? One thing I usually have to do a lot to any reed is sand the back of the reed that lays against the table. I just set 400 grit wet/dry paper on something flat and rub the reed on top, and it does wonders.

RE: reeds

My experience exactly. The first reed I tried was fantastic except the tip collapsed over the space of an hour's playing, just broke up in my mouth but it still played. Unfortunately that was pretty well the last one that did.

RE: reeds

They are great! I'm hooked, and if you have read all the above posts, its not hard to figure out I'm a tough customer. Marca's web site is: www.marca-france.com and you buy them at www.wwbw.com . You can't buy them at your local store!

Give them a try, you WILL love them!

Miles

RE: reeds

I've used all the reeds you've talked about with quite success. Perhaps your using the wrong strength, or maybe your not breaking them in well. Or perhaps Rico reeds just don't work for you. Everyone's different, and have their own preferences.

RE: reeds

Dear Miles,

Sorry that these reeds didn't work out for you. This can help add some depth to the sound. Typically you need to use a half strength harder than on a normal blank reed.

As far as buying samples directly from Rico, we don't sell direct to consumers. Try asking your local music shop if you can buy a few reeds of each reed you want to try in order to get a comparison.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions!

Rico

reeds

I just bought some of the plasticover reeds, they work great! I lide thick blank reeds, and was wondering what the difference in sound is between the two. And a suggestion is that ya'll start making plasticover in thick blanks as well as traditional cut.

One more question is, do ya'll have samples of your different reeds avalable? I am asking for just one or two of each "brand" to try.(I am willing to pay.)

Miles
