i was just wondering what kind of music you guys play, what you listen to and what your biggest influence is...

i like listening to metalcore and metal music(between the buried and me, underoath, the chariot etc.) mostly but also listen to older music to see how music evolved(eg. pink floyd, depeche mode, iron maiden, led zeppelin etc.). obviously having a wide spectrum of music taste is good to become a better drummer so i try getting a bit of everything.
so, what about you?

I hate rap/hip-hop CRAP!
i had a conversation with this white wannabe black guy who listens to rap and all that crap(hey that rhymes! now i too can become a rapper.). it's so frustrating talking to someone like that because they honestly think that it's good music and it takes a lot of soul and passion to write a song about pimps and hoes! come on!
i was in germany for a while and the germans really don't have any good bands going. and they all love their techo music?!

but i rate bad music in this order:

1. rap/hip-hop(and rock with rapping in it)
2. techno/dance/electronica(and all possible branches of that)
3. pop
4. southern/country rock
5. punk rock(especially new age punk rock and those teen bands)
6. bands who sing songs with meaningless or stupid lyrics which ties in with the above(but also those "oooh baby, i love you" songs)
7. opera(but that really does take passion and soul to make and i respect them for that)

Hi,

I got to meet Bernard Purdie back stage on Zildjian Day in Chicago back in I believe 1983? along with many other great artists. Steve Gadd, Larrie Londin, Kenny Aronoff, Alejo Poveda & Ruben Alvarez to name some. Kenny Aronoff was called in to fill in for Tommy Aldridge at the time. I was accually in line to get in when I saw Ruben carrying his stuff in. (Ruben Alvarez was my teacher at the time. That's how I got backstage, also to help him lug his $hit in!). I got to meet all of them and it boosted my wanting to learn. Anyway, Bernard wasn't very friendly when I asked for his autograph but man is he a cool drummer.

Paradiddle

I learned a cool thing awhile back a teacher taught me,where you take a paradiddle and change the order and it makes you accent the beat differently but really its just the same thing. Example:

You take the first letter/stroke and put it at the end.

What the weirdest/funniest gig-experience you ever had?

I'm not even going to share some of them! But...I'll start off with one that happened to a friend of mine - a saxophonist. he was on this Jewish wedding gig with some band and the drummer in that band had brought along some empty Tupperware containers so he could cop a bunch of the catered food.

Apparently in this particular Jewish wedding, there was to be a special, blessed loaf of bread that was to be "broken" in a special ceremony of some kind at some point.

Cut to the chase...

The drummer's Tupperware containers were full. Next thing you know, the Rabbi asks for the special loaf of bread to be brought out.

No loaf of bread!

WHERE OH WHERE COULD THE BLESSED LOAF OF BREAD HAVE GONE?

(need I tell you the punchline?)

All's well that ends well, though... The drummer snuck the loaf back out of his drum case and on a table out of the way. I thin some little kids might have gotten blamed for the mishap! LOL!

I'm just wondering who you think is the best rock drummer!

For me it's Eric Singer with Alice Cooper. Eric has the showmanship and mindset of the great swing and Big band drummers, but the sounds of Heavy Metal and he's just fun to watch....Easier said than done!

One time back in 1983?, I went to a clinic to see Billy Cobham and Vince Garabaldi. During the time Mr. Garabaldi was taking questions, someone asked him, "Is there a certain way you like to sit at your kit?". I thought this was a stupid question and blurted out, with my back hunched out and leaning over, "If you're a hunchback, you'd play down like this". Everyone laughed and Mr. Garabaldi said, "Thank You Quasimoto!" Needless to say, I was very embarassed! I need to learn to engage my brain before I put my mouth in gear. Later I thought this might be a good name for a band!

Playing In The 'Big Leagues'

I got a call last week from Corey Ledet, one of the top young Zydeco accordion players out of Louisiana today. He's got some Northeast dates coming up, and the price of gas is forcing him to reconsider his original plan of driving up with his whole band. He wants me to play drums, and bring my guitarist and bassist for his gig this week in RI, and possibly other dates in the next couple of weeks.

I played with him once before, an 'emergency' fill-in when he was on the road without a drummer. I must have done OK for him to be calling me to back him again, and also trusting that the musicians I would choose could get the job done. I'm psyched. Here's the details:

Saturday May 19 at 8 PM, Corey 'Lil Pop' Ledet & His Zydeco Band at the [URL=http://salsrbclub.com/the_club_002.htm]German Club[/URL], 78 Carter Avenue in Pawtucket RI. I'll be on drums, with my usual cohorts from The Zydeco Hogs on bass and guitar. Corey on accordions of course, along with Corey's regular rubboard player/backup vocalist. The show is put on by [URL=http://salsrbclub.com/]Sal's Productions[/URL].

We will also be backing up Corey the following weekend at the [URL=http://czspringtimereunion.org]5th Annual Springtime Dance Reunion Festival[/URL] in Salt Point NY. The Hogs will be doing their own set each day, as well as backing up legendary Louisiana accordionists Dexter Ardoin and Corey Ledet (we were already supposed to be backing Dexter, but now we're backing Corey as well). Corey has another festival gig in CT on June 9 that we may be doing with him as well.

Flamenco cajon workshop by Albert Vila

This workshop will cover cajon techniques, contemporary flamenco styles (rumba, tango, tanguillos, alegrías, bulerías and seguiriyas) and practical applications to other instruments and contemporary styles. All levels and other instrumentalists other than percussionists are welcomed.
Albert Vila holds a Bachelor Degree at Berklee College of Music (Boston) and has worked with Modern Romance and top spanish band Estopa among many others. As a teacher he has created the percussion curriculum at Conservatori Superior del Liceu de Barcelona. He is currently a Duende Percusión endorsee.
