So, if any members here are also mutual members at another discussion forum, then maybe those people could pass the news along? Don't mention my screen name in any of the references, though...You might get booted for conspiring! ;):hehe:

Like...maybe Poopy could pass the word along at GhostBusterNote...and so on. It's a local scene jazz rag that the guy who runs the record label I record on, kind of does on the side. It's a volunteer basis as far as the writing goes -no profit whatsoever...just a small way to allow some of the musicians around here to get some more of the exposure they aren't getting from other local sources. Many of the local guys have written articles. I just wrote a recent article for them and it was kinda fun so I thought this Peter Erskine thing might kind of make an extra-special treat (IF it happens) that only I would know about -since I frequent the world of internet drum discussion boards.

Do tell about the bouncer beating Jaco....Do you know any details? I wonder if Peter was playing the night Jaco came dressed in mud.

If you write for a newspaper, why not just drop P.E. an email, and ask him if he would be willing to do a telephone interview with you. To me that makes more sense than trying to scrap together an article from questions that will most certaintly bounce all over the place.

RE: PETER ERSKINE Coming to Drum Talk - 1/25/07

Let's think of some more names, shall we?

Edgar Allen Poe -genius and was an opium smoker and an absinthe drinker

Jackson Pollock -genius and alcoholic

MOST of the great jazz geniuses had more than a dance or two with substances...the list is too long to name them all.

I guess my question is: "Who is totally clear and clean who is also creating something "new" that would be comparable to what those old, drugged-out n'er-do-wells were doing on a regular basis in the old days?" ;) I mean, I realize there are some incredible players around these days...technicians who can "do it all" so-to-speak...but the direction of creativity seems to be more redundant than ever in the jazz world...and it should be the jazz world that's at the forefront of making things change...but I'll tell ya what...I know more about what Britney Spears' cooter looks like than I do about what's going on in various underground music scenes...because that's what makes the news..that's what's important now...that's what's on the television and the radio...and it begins to infiltrate our entire social essence to the point that nobody would frickin' care even if they knew that something new was trying to happen in the world of art/music. We've already been there/done that/seen it all already! What HASN'T been done? Painting with ****, piss and blood? -already been done. Having yourself shot through the arm for a performance piece? -already been done. Destroy the musical instruments...light them on fire...kick them to pieces? -already been done. Play really nice, melodic pieces with great lyrics? -already been done. Play "harmolodics"? -already been done...EVERY conceivable angle has been used so much that there are no more angles -they've all been rubbed smooth.

Musicians play on...but not as many people know enough to care. I've heard so many stories about his crazy binges, but the guy some how "brought it" at showtime as one of the greatest bass players ever. I will be sure to post these when the day comes!
I was on tour witha band in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area several years ago -like maybe 1985 and we had finished the gig and went out on the beach (They have these grass-hut type mini bars set up all alongh the run of beach associated with a particular hotel) and I was having a drink while watching the lightning storm happening off in the distance...a light breeze was blowing...it was really nice. Anyway, the bartender overheard a conversation we were having about God-only-knows what...and the subject of Weather Report came up and then Jaco got mentioned...probably bass playing got mentioned...and the bartender chimes in and says, "Jaco -the bass player? Yeah, that guy was in here not too long ago, asking for a drink and he was drunk off his *** so no one was serving him and he was starting fights with everybody and yelling that he was the world's greatest bass player. What an asshole! The cops finally came and carted him off..."

Ironically, that kind of drinking must have played a role in his demise. Didn't he get into a fight with someone and he fell and cracked his skull or something like that? What was the cause of death? I forget...but I think it was something like that.

Look at the long list of names of the truly great players who were clearly addicted to drugs -not just in terms of "recreational" or "binge" usage...and yet, they were THE icons they were...many of them are untouched to this day in terms of creativity. Was that creativity drug-related? enhanced? How many of the world's most creatively-minded/artistic people are/were also drug addicts? I'm curious to collect opinions from all of us in that regard...but somehow, it would be interesting to get Peter Erskine's comments, since he was around some of those very icons.

genius + drugs = icon + die young ??

RE: PETER ERSKINE Coming to Drum Talk - 1/25/07

Here, This one will be good for thirty days! Oh, and before I forget...MY trio that will be working that Thursday night will be playing one of Peter Erskine's tunes "Lady In The Lake"! HA! :hehe: I love that tune!

So...here are some questions that I think should stir some discussion... Let me know if you think I should re-word anything. Anyway, I am going to TRY and get back here asap that night so (hopefully) I will get in on some "live"...maybe I can get some in BEFORE I leave...We'll see. Anyway, here are the Q's:

----------------------------------------------------------------

#1. It is well-known that Gene Krupa liked to smoke weed. It’s common knowledge that John Bonham drank a lot of booze. I’m sure there are many similar stories throughout the music business over the years. It would seem that some of the most memorable music was made by musicians who were under the influence of some kind of chemical. Jaco Pastorius, a musician you worked with, was a phenomenal player and a well-known alcoholic around certain areas of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />South Florida. Generally speaking, the message we send out is that nothing good can come of drug use, but there are so many contrary examples of this –all the heroin of the 50’s and 60’s and the great jazz players who were also junkies….the 70’s, Hendrix and LSD…The Beatles and LSD…all the coke that was around in the 80’s and 90’s…Do you see any kind of correlation between the drugs of a given era and the musical style of that era? Were you ever around Jaco when he was out of control? What was that like?

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

#2.What happened with the European trio (John T. and Palle D.)? Is it true that Manfred Eicher cut that band because he said that you “grooved too much” –or something to that effect? Will you be doing more work with the trio in the future? I loved the sound of that trio –especially recorded by ECM. What kind of studio set-up did you have when you recorded on ECM? What do you think “it” is that defines that ECM sound? Is it the room?-the reverb? I’m dying to know more about how to try and get closer to that kind of ambient “thing” they always get. How were the mics placed? What kinds of mics were being used on the piano and bass and drums?

#3.Which musicians had the biggest influence on you? What was the best advice you ever got from another musician?

#4.Do you happen to recall the gig you played at the French Market Mall (Oklahoma City) in 1983 with Steps Ahead?…the club was called “Bianca’s Jazz Club”. You were playing a green ( a specific color of green) Yamaha drums. The stage was very small, but it seemed like everyone was having fun …I know you all sounded great! I meant to say “Thanks!” for the influence your playing has had on me that night. You made me see that playing the drums could sound “elegant”.

#5.(A bass player wanted me to ask)...Do you ever think about shaving off the hair on your back when you look at that picture in that one ad? ;)

Oh, and a BIG Thank you! for participating with this forum! :) :) :)

(um...you might not want to ask #5!) ;)

RE: PETER ERSKINE Coming to Drum Talk - 1/25/07
Administrator (1/15/2007)
luna-
Don't worry! Very sad news indeed. RIP Michael.

"Modern Times" is the disc i dont presently have of Steps/Steps Ahead. Never got too see them. I got Erskine addicted waaaaaaayyyyyyy back, when i heard him.First with Weather Report and then: Mike Manieri's vinyl, WUNDERLUST - which is a BIG fav from back then. I dont know why, i didnt really purchase the ECM stuff.......One Kenny Wheeler album with John Taylor IIRC. Shame it all went tits up! .......into smoooooooooooooothhhhhhhh jizz. :)

RE: PETER ERSKINE Coming to Drum Talk - 1/25/07

Hey, thanks, Luna! People are going to "talk" about us, you know? (heh heh! ssshhhh!:)) We'll have to have another "fight" so that people don't think we are in bed with each other...-jk! ;)

Mad, I want to say it's "British Racing Green" or "Kelly Green" or...damn...something else, maybe...sheesh! But, yes, although I can't see a pic of the kit from that link you posted, the kit was more than likely the same one.

I mean, I was sitting, WIDE-eyed from about 12 feet away from them. there was Eliane playing the resident Steinway (nice piano), Maineiri was playing his "synthi-vibe"...

Here's the real kicker to the story...I was at this concert with my older brother, Mike and an office-mate of his, Amy. Somehow, Eddie Gomez knew Amy from some mutual relation or something...and so, on the break between their two sets that night, Eddie Gomez came to our table, sat down and bought us all a glass of red wine! I mostly sat there and didn't say anything...too much in awe.

I remember Eliane Elias walking past me through the crowd and I actually made eye contact with her! She actually smiled at me! Oh, my she was gorgeous...and bare-footed, too! I had a lot of thoughts about her...nevermind.

1983 was about the heart of my love of "jazz fusion". There were lots of "fusion" bands around. Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets, Weather Report, RTF, Jeff Lorber, Ronny Laws, Stuff, Lee Ritenour, Pat Metheny Group...all that stuff was what I was listening to. When Steps Ahead showed up, they were like the ultimate "dream band" of the century. So many different facets and ways to go within that band -that particular formation.

Then the term "fusion" began to change for me...into listening to bands like Jack Dejohnette's Special Edition or Old and New Dreams...Ornette Coleman...stuff that was more "out". Bands like Steps Ahead and that concept, in general, began to fade...bands got more acoustic again...horn players started coming out front again...guitars and synths stepped backwards. The VSOP quintet was the remnant of the oldf Miles Davis Quintet...which led me back, back, back into the older bands...got aquainted with the West coast sound -Charles Lloyd...which led me forward, again....led me into the realm of the Scandinavian/European sounds of the ECM record label...which led me to the Peter Erskine Trio with John Taylor (piano) and Palle Danielsson (bass)...which led me to Bobo Stenson's trio with Anders Jormin (bass) and Jon Christensen (drums)...which is where my musical tastes have ultimately been wading for the last few years...intermixed with the many new flavors that the internet and Amazon.com have exposed.

I will try to come up with a few good questions to ask Peter Erskine. Damn, I wish I could be here "live" for this. I'm going crazy about this. :)

RE: PETER ERSKINE Coming to Drum Talk - 1/25/07
Administrator (1/12/2007)
Funk - 9PM EST is 2:00 in the morning your time. Thanks for the offer to pass on some Q's. I'll put some together later and get it to you. Thanks again. This sounds reaaaaallly cool if it happens!

Mad,

1983, Oklahoma City...a place called "Bianca's Jazz Club...located in a MALL! LOL! He was playing in Steps Ahead with the (then) very young Eliane Elias, Mike Maineiri, Brecker, Eddie Gomez on bass. He was playing Yamaha drums in a very nice, unusual green finish (I forget the name of that color green...but it had a name...damn).

Peter Erskine and Brecker came in and were playing the PacMan game (lol!) and hanging out waiting for the sound check to start. They sounded GREAT! I was in awe. Yeah, Erskine has the touch.

His drum tech was a black guy with blonde hair and after he had set up the kit, Erskine came in and sat down and said something like, "Wow, the hi-hat clutch is really choked!" I was listening and watching everything...trying to take it all in and hopefully remember something. Oh, btw, I still have the ticket from that concert...#001!! I guess you could say that I have been a fan for quite awhile! heh heh

RE: PETER ERSKINE Coming to Drum Talk - 1/25/07

Lugs- I'm happy to pass on a few questions for you, but can't send a long list of questions for Peter to answer. It wouldn't be fair to the rest of the folks coming online to "chat," and get there questions answered. If we get some good questions asked by others you may get some insight there as well.

Funk - 9PM EST is 2:00 in the morning your time. His cymbal sound would be described at Ghostnote as: AWESOME, WOW!, FANTASTIC... (In all honesty, he really does have the most fantastic cymbal sound to my ear on his recordings. He is SO consistant in this regard - i find...)

Though, he should be using Remo, Matt. :)

What time is 9pm EST. I just realized that I probably won't be back from my gig by the time he is online. Hey, if I submitted some questions ahead of time, would someone be able to relay them? Like...what if I asked a LOT of questions? -like a mini-interview kind of thing? Cool? The reason I ask is because I have started doing some writing for a local jazz newspaper and this kind of thing might make a good article. Would that be okay or do you think it would be somehow inappropriate? I just like to take advantage of every opportunity to type! :hehe:

RE: PETER ERSKINE Coming to Drum Talk - 1/25/07

Yeah...He probably won't even remember the gig, but I met him and Mike Brecker back in the early 80's and they played at this really strange place to play. He has been such a great friend and supporter of Evans over the years, and we're so happy that he agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to "chat" online with our members.

I'm somehow unfamiliar with Peter's legendary career, he has recorded/toured with some of the all-time great artists and bands. Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Mike Stern, and the Yellow Jackets to name a handful. Besides the nearly 450 albums recorded with these greats and others, he's recorded 12 solo albums as well!

Whether you're a beginner, a seasoned pro, a real banger playing metal, or a cool jazz cat, don't miss this opportunity to "rub keyboards" with one of the drumming legends of our time! Get your questions ready, and fire away!

Besides being a great player, Peter is a wonderful teacher offering unique insight on drums, and has produced a series of instructional DVDs and books. Definitely check them out!

Visit Peter's website for more information and background on this soon-to-be Drum Talk member: http://www.petererskine.com/

Stay tuned for more details, and be sure to be online the night of the 25th!!
