Back on subject, check out this inspirational email I got from David Byrne today:

"Pardon the bulk mailing. I Can't Vote. I am an immigrant with a Green Card and, therefore, I am not eligible to vote in a federal election. FYI - I can get drafted (luckily, Daniel Berrigan burned my draft board's records) and I pay taxes, yet I cannot vote for President. On Election Day, I see my neighbors heading to the nearby elementary school to cast their ballots. The voting booth joint is a great leveler; the whole neighborhood - rich, poor, old, young, decrepit and spunky - they all turn out in one day.

But most of you can vote. What can I say? The Republicans have made us less safe than before 9/11, bankrupted this economy, started an illegal war they can't - and don't intend to - finish, removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US, and have robbed US citizens of many of their basic rights. Global warming? What's that? Science and education? Investment in our future? No, thanks - we'll stick with a good 'ole hockey mom. Ignorant, and ****ing proud of it, as is always the case.

Although it looks like a shoo-in, it ain't over 'til Florida. And there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests. So please, get to your local elementary school, post office, town hall, or whatever, and cast your vote and make this a country we can all be proud of. We can get out of this mess, and life can be better than it is.

The "essence" of the Church was built by a couple of guys who, while smoking extreme amounts of pot, were "divinely inspired" to write the new "Bible" of the ages. In essence, every religion has it's "us's" and its "thems" -it's good and evil, if you will. and nobody really and truly knows what their religion is all about, anyway. So, "Bob" and The Church represents religion in it's truest sense -that of paying to find out what you already know. Bob just gives you a focus point and the Church gives you an institution to pay. All the saints and prophets involved are as ambiguous as any other religion's. What the Church gives back to its congregation is the ability to give them what they pay for -and that is "Bob". Bob is the leader who has a good story with a lot of complicated and often confusing text. Sound familiar? ;) And it just keeps spiraling around that way forever and ever and ever.

As with any religious manuscript, you must read it in order to get it (or not). And in order to get it, you must pay for it.

I'll answer that by applying the Subgenius "Don't ask. Don't tell" sacrament. St. Lucifer knew how to have a good time. Let's leave it at that. Burning man is nothing.I have seen the Launching of the head of Arnold Palmer.

I was in a "Doctor" band known as The Young Nakeds. We invented the concept of T-shirts for the head. Our lead singer was the brother of one of the founding members of the Church. I dare not speak his name , but PRAISE BOB! for him.

The idea is that you pay them so that hey tell you what you already know! WHAT COULD BE EASIER? YOU CAN FIND SALVATION AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR WALLET JUST LIKE WITH ANY GOOD RELIGION! PRAISE BOB!

Ask me about The Vortex Bass Method, sometime....but not right now.

When I saw the guy with the pipe in his mouth on wikipedia, I'm like....I know that guy from somewhere. But I couldn't figure it out. O-Lugs AVATAR! So, you've kept me in the dark all this time about your church membership and the church itself. Man! I oughta!

I'm curious as to how you normally celebrate the various feast days. Especially the Feast of St Lucifer?

Being an ordained minister in The Church of the Subgenius, myself (bought into it in the late 1980's), I can tell you that I never heard of his membership. Now, the guy from Devo IS definitely a member. I have deep connections within the Church. I am forbigden (yes, forbigden) from saying too much about it....because you all might be "pink" and considered "them".

I'm very surprised to hear that KK. I think it's cool if that is actually true. Because of this info you've mentioned on Byrne, I decided to check wikipedia on him. It mentions him being a "minister" of the [b]Church of the SubGenius[/b]. Which I have never heard of before. Wiki states...

The Church describes its philosophy in the following manner:

Glad you dug it ET! I pop my copy in the old DVD player about twice a year. I use it to remind me of what "stage presence" means.

Fun fact about David Byrne: he was, from all that I can find about the man, a straight guy. No drugs, no drinking, no chemical "aids" of any kind. Actually he is/was a rather big nerd. The rest of the band were all big stoners of course. But not Byrne. I don't even think he smoked cigarettes.

And if you catch his show today (he's currently on tour and has a new album out with Brian Eno) it is pretty much the same gig he was doing 30 years ago. Such agelessness is the payoff for a life of clean living.

I finally got around to watching Stop Making Sense. I did indeed watch it through without any interruptions, as Krispy Kirk suggested, and I listened with headphones on. My wife was away and I figured I'd watch it without her (she has forgiven me for this, thankfully:D). Words are inadequate to describe my feelings. I can honestly say that I had a smile across my face almost through the whole DVD and I laughed out loud a few of times.

Here's my lame attempt at describing the movie...very energetic and almost athletic in action/body/dance moves. I felt tired just watching them do their stuff. I usually hate "showy" type concerts and prefer just to see a band play standing in place, but this was different and showy in a good, creative and unique way. The humor was... was...I don't know....just humorous. Everyone knows that comedy is best the more serious the facial expression of the comic. Byrne does his weird and humorous stuff with that serious and spaced out/drugged out look that makes it all worthwhile. (No, this is not a pro-drug post:D) Then, at one point, when Byrne just stands there in a normal kind of way, THAT "normalness" seems even more strange and comical!

Chris Franz never uses a ride cymbal, ever, through the whole show. It's all hats and 2 crashes. Yet, it was perfect. It was a great concert and I do recommend it to those of you who like the Talking Heads. Thanks KK for the recommendation to see the film. It was worth it and maybe I'll get my wife to watch it with me too. I usually don't desire to see a movie, documentary or concert twice within a short time, but I wouldn't mind seeing this again real soon.

Bernie Worrell was really the only showy player in the T Heads and he was just a temporary member for a couple of records. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more minimalist band out of that era...

Point being: You don't need to play a whole bunch of notes if the few you do play are the right ones.

Thanks for the viewing and listening tips. I will definitely try to watch it in one sitting. My wife has a decent TV/Audio set-up. The TV is relatively small by today's standards, but her stereo system is pretty good and that is definitely the most important thing.

Hey ET! Merry Christmas!

Here are two tips to enhance your SMS experience:

1. Make every attempt to watch it all the way through in one sitting. If you have to stop/pause it for any reason, you might as well start it over at the beginning otherwise the "transitions" (especially during the first 4-5 numbers) will lose much of their impact.

2. Play the audio track (ideally in 5.1, but stereo is also acceptable) on a decent system at a level approximating a live concert. A big screen helps too, but using a big sound system is more crucial for full effect.

Yeah, I think I will rent or buy it. Most likely I'll buy it. I recently found out that my soon to be wife is a huge fan of the Talking Heads, so I'm sure she'll enjoy it too. I caught David Byrne on Austin City Limits sometime back and although I didn't care for the drum/cymbal sound of whoever that drummer was, I totally enjoyed the concert.

As you rediscover their stuff, you'll quickly realize that everybody in the band was funky, not just Chris Franz. David Byrne is one of the funkiest white guys on the planet.

Do yourself a massive favor and rent/buy the concert DVD "Stop Making Sense."

Chris Franz played/plays Zildjians I believe...not sure which series but he sure did keep them cranked down tight! If you like the Heads' rhythm section, you'll love Tom Tom Club. Same people - Chris and his wife, former T-Heads bass player Tina Weymouth. Totally different kind of music though...

I was not much of a fan of this group back when they were big. Now......I love their stuff. I never realized just how funky they were.

I'm also a fan of Chris Fransz (sp?) drum and cymbal sound. I see videos on youtube of him playing his Rogers kit, but anyone have any info on his cymbals?
