Put it on your finger before you play and keep it on during the week. The glue will protect your finger and speed healing better than a band during your down time. It won't affect the feel of your stick like a bandage either. As someone else mentioned, give it several days of rest if you can. I also noticed that it seems to alleviate the soreness quite well.

This method has never failed me once.

RE: Drumming injuries

Is your finger ripping (splitting) over an exsisting callous? or is it fresh skin?. Years ago id had a bad splitting situation over an already thick callous that was a bit**!. Is your grip to tight?. Is the rip vertically on the finger or horizontally as in a tear going across the finger in a ring fashion. I had to use a callous file to lessen the depth of the callous so that the split could heal. Try to use more of a Moeller grip suggested by either JoJo Meyer or Jim Chapin. I was literally forced to lessen my grip so that the tear would heal. My tear was deep! and took awhile to heal up. I started using heavier sticks so that the stick would do the work instead of slamming with a 5A caveman style. Keep a couple of band-aids on that split with some tea tree oil on it or some neosporine.

RE: Drumming injuries

Hey, thanks for the time man. Yeah, they are actually splitting, not blistering. It is really odd, ecause you would think that after 6 months the calluses would be thck/strong enough to stop it.

I tried some real good hand lotion for several weeks, and my hands felt like a baby's butt, but my finger still split after a gig..

RE: Drumming injuries

Blistering or ripping apart?

If they are blistering, I would say to give yourself 2 days of rest, with no play w/ sticks (I know, it's hard :P I'm sorry). The blisters will quickly callus and you'll take twice as long to blister then next time. Play, and repeat. ;)

If you have to keep playing, wear some drummer's gloves (I know, they're stupid, but they help if your hands are hurting. Gloves = More Padding)

--------

If you're hands are ripping apart, like splitting as if they are really dry, invest in some hand balm. It'll help your hands heal. My dad uses this stuff (he's a heating guy, so his hands are normally pretty cut up and split):

http://www.badgerbalm.com/

Drumming injuries

Hey guys, I gotta question for ya. I joined a band about 6 months ago and we have been gigging 2-4 times a month. We play 40 +/- songs a night. It is mostly 80s rock stuff. Here is my question. My index finger on my right hand (I’m right handed) keeps splitting… The skin is actually tearing a little bit, which kind of hurts… I have no idea what to do to stop this.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I am using wood sticks, with no tape or anything on them. I am 99% sure my grip is technically very good, and I am not gripping the sticks too tight. Any ideas on what I can do to lessen the tearing?

I am thinking about using Stickum or something to see if that helps.
