| Is there a resource to help determine what guage string to use for altered tunings?
For example - I am playing in DADGAD on a 12 string Guild, but using 8 strings - the 1st (single), 2nd (single), 3rd (octaves), 4th (octaves), 5th (single), and 6th (single). I would like to avoid having the 6th be too floppy, since it will be tuned down. I also usually tune my 12 strings down a step since the high G string seems to snap on me too easily if it is tuned to pitch. So. I'm looking for optimum guages for specific pitches.
Any help would be appreciated.
Oops! I found the Tension guide.
Now if someone would gently explain it to me. |

| bmoretele, Glad you found the tension guide. Here it is for others that are interested: String Tension Guide This is located in the Support/FAQ section of the D'Addario Strings site. As for help reading it, keep in mind that we're showing the tensions of each single string we make (based on 25.5" for guitar) tuned to a range of typical pitches. For example, a PL010 on page 6 (typically high E) is shown tuned up 1 1/2 steps to G, and tuned down 4 steps to low G. Hope this helps. Let me know if you still have questions. Matt |

| It's very straightforward. What don't you understand about it?

| When tuning a guitar down, consider bringing the string gauge up. For example if you normally use 12's tuned to standard A 440, when you tune to DADGAD go to 13's. The relaxed string tension will make the strings feel sloppy and the neck will pull up more. The 13's will compensate almost perfectly. I use 13's in normal tuning AND in my drop tunings. I have my guitars setup to compensate for this. I have no issues, but I am using 6 string guitars.
Its all about the tone. |
