Interesting to see some of the responses to my initial topic. I understand the tonal aspects of coating slightly compromises the sound for my ears too, but I live by the beach and it's savage on strings so a longer term win negates the loss for me. I've recently been trying out Galli pro-coated (made in Italy) which have worked quite well for me because though I import them here to Australia, they still cost around 30% less than the Elixirs and I can get an average of 4 gigs out of them without breakages. They're not losing much by way of tone either. I change them to avoid breakages during a set.

The reliability of Elixirs is still a bit questionable for me to use them for a gig guitar. I don't mind having them on some of my studio guitars as they sound bright for months and months. I've ordered some more to see if they work better than the first batch.  Lately I record my results in a diary, so I'm not just guessing as to what happens. I'll know for a fact how long they last, tonally and structurally.

When I compare that to the uncoated and I've tried recently - Galli Lucky Star, Knucklehead,Kurt Mangan, Martin Silk and Steel, all of these dull up quick and aren't so great tonally for my ears even new. By less than a week they really sound old.

I still haven't got back to using the Extended Play D'Addario as my last experience was not good value. Besides the breakages, they dulled up pretty fast too. But if you readers start telling me you are getting good service and tone from them, I will surely try them again soon. Regards Steve

When buying a Planet Waves soundhole humidifier (about time there was such a product from Planet Waves, excellent idea by the way) up in Stockholm I also asked for my normal strings (aforementioned Cleartones which cost the same here as D'Addario and Elixir). 4Sound didn't stock them but told me that Elixir now offer a coated plain string option now.

Given that it has been my experience of dulled plain strings that let to me switching for the time being to Cleartones it could be time for D'Addario to re-assess the market and the technology and see if it isn't time to also offer this as an option. At which point I will try them and if it works for me will start buying them again!

We've actually looked into the option of coating plain steel strings, but have not found a coating we felt was worth it, maintained the natural feel of a plain string, and/or stood up to the abuse.  Plain steel strings are tin plated.  This in itself is a corrosion barrier, and it is usually not the problem when dealing with string corrosion.  We will continue to test and evaluate various methods and mateirals, but concern ourselves first and foremost with the tone and feel.  I hope this helps explain where we're at with regard to coating plain steels.  Thanks!

I had a different problem with EXPs.  I used Elixirs for about the last year and they easily lasted about 2-3 months.  I tried two sets of D'addario EXP16s and I got under two weeks out of one set.  The sound on the 4,5, and 6 strings went total DULL.  I mean "thud" dull.  I changed the strings to a second set (purchased at the same time) and they lasted about 3 weeks.  Now the first set did spend a lot of time out of doors, as I had gone on a jam weekend camping trip, but the guitar spent each night in the hard case.  I am returning the strings so that D'Addario can determine if there was a manufacturing flaw (no coating?).  I am back onto Elixirs for now.  I am wondering if there are any others reporting this issue.
