| I'm a big fan of heavy-gauge flatwounds for a deep thumpy old P-bass tone. I recently bought a bass which can only be strung through-body; and I also recently learned that some heavy-gauge flatwounds will break easily when strung that way, due to the sharp angle of the through-body. It also depends (apparently) on the tension of the core. Here's a reference in another forum: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263899
So: Are the "regular long" Chromes (050, 070, 085, 105) susceptible to this sort of breakage? If they are, then what is the next best substitute?
And generally speaking, are roundwounds NOT susceptible to such a degree? Thanks! |

| You can string flats through the body without doing any harm.
