| | Hey all! I've sort of inherited a sound system, as I'm becoming an audio tech at a church. The system was supposedly "new" in late 2005, and I'm pretty sure that people overpaid for it. Anyway, here are the components: - American DJ PDP-800 Power Distribution Panel (has surge protection, I believe) - Audio-Technica 3000 Series Wireless Mics and Receivers - dbx Driverack PA EQ and Loudspeaker Control System - Phoenix PH5U External Power Supply - Phoenix Pro326 Mixer - QSC Audio RMX 1850HD Professional Power Amplifier - Tascam CD-A500 Tape Recorder and CD Player - Yorkville Coliseum CA1 Professional PA Amplifier I have no idea what make and model speakers are hooked up. I've snagged users manuals for everything but the Phoenix PH5U, and don't really know what that does. This audio system is for spoken voice, and I'm wondering if there are any components that should be upgraded, removed, or added. Upon first inspection, a ground lift kit had been installed on a plug, and half the screws have been removed from each rackmount component. This system apparently has been maintained poorly, so I'm a bit leary on working with it. I did remove the ground lift, which hasn't caused any performance problems. I didn't feel much like risking injury with that thing. There are severe ground issues associated with the old wiring in the building, however. Thanks for any insight or advice!

| | OK, here goes, I'll probably open my mouth and insert foot. I am all for making what you have work. I do not know anything about the Phoenix gear, but what you have should get you going. Jumping out on a limb, I would say that the Phoenix external power supply powers the Phoenix mixing board. The other gear sounds like it will work just fine. The speakers are a big component to the list and depending on whether or not there a bass cabinets, you may want to look into getting a crossover for separating the lows to the bass bins and the mids and highs to the standard PA speakers. If there are no bass cabinets, it may not make that much of a difference. Since you mentioned that this is for spoken word, you might also look into a compressor (or 2 or 3) kind of depends on how many mics you might be running at a time. It is always a good thing to have a compressor to keep someone from yelling or talking incredibly loud and distorting the sound. Besides that you should be fine assuming everything else works. You probably don't need any effects processor since it is for voice in a church system, but some people like reverb and delay effects if there will be a singing choir that you are micing. Also, check your microphones and make sure that they all have different frequencies for each wireless system so you don't have people talking on the same system, that can create chaos and noise. If the church is poorly grounded, don't lift the ground unless it becomes a last resort. Look into a better power conditioner that may take out most of the hum (Furman or Monster are good places to start). Where at all possible, wire things up with good balanced cabling and that should keep a better signal to noise ratio. Good luck, it's always a fun challenge in a church system (or any live system) that may have multiple users and still trying to keep everything quiet, clean and level. |

| | Thanks for the input and advice! I'll have to dig around and find out what we've got for speakers. I'm positive that we don't have a bass cab, though. The dbx unit does have compression and limiter features on it, so that's covered. It also has a nice low-frequency cut feature. The four wireless mics all run at different frequencies, so we haven't had any problems there. It's easy to set them all on separate channels. A better power conditioner is definitely the first thing I've made note of with this system. Ideally, one with at least 12 power outlets would be necessary. Does Furman make something with that many outlets? I don't like Monster products. In the meantime, do you think that the Hum-X product would be worthwhile for the ground hum? Thanks again for the advice! I just returned from Edmonton, AB from running sound at a huge music convention, and have some additional ideas to utilize from that experience.

| | We're moving the audio rack from the balcony down to the rear corner of the sanctuary, as it's difficult to monitor from the balcony. Will we need to put some sound-absorbing panels in that rear corner, to avoid the "wall effect" to sound? How important is direct line of sight between wireless transmitters and receivers? Should we create a shelf above our mixer to place our receivers on, rather than having them shin-high and enclosed with rest of the rack gear? How important is ventilation, and would a rack-mounted fan unit be advisable? We're looking to move everything into a roll-top unit, similar to this: http://www.music123.com/Product/ZoomImage.aspx?sku=121691 Thanks!
