Which musicians had the biggest influence on you? What was the best advice you ever got from another musician?

Joe Zawinul gave me some great advice: "Always compose when you play"
Steve Gadd once offered the following: "Never pet a burning dog..."

Between those 2 pieces of advice, I think I'll do okay.

Oh yeah, my favorite advice when it came to playing was from Jaco ... he told me two things:

1. "Don't think so much when you play ... just concentrate!"
and
2. "Have fun!"

New talent ...
well, the "new" players like Bill Stewart, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Keith Carlock, Ari Hoenig, Matt Wilson, et all, have all been around for a while now ... they're certainly all very great.

Matt Slocum is making some good noise out here; other players (all former or current students!) you might want to look for include Sean Hutchinson, Colin Koproske, Reade Pryor, Jamey Tate, Nick Karvon ... just off the top of my head.

I heard the drummer from the Juilliard School of Music band in the next room at IAJE, and he or she sounded GREAT.
