| | I can't keep my G string (no jokes here please) to stay in tune longer than about a song. Is this string problem, tuner problem, guitar problem? I use Addario phosphor bronze light strings on my lower end Martin. Thanks for any help you can give me. |

| | Welcome to the forums! I've had a string that constantly slipped out of tune on one of my instruments. In my case it was the tuning machine. The tension of the string would pull on it, and a screw in the tuning machine wasn't all the way tight. A simple tightening with a screwdriver fixed it for me. Is this a new set of strings that's slipping on you? New strings will do that a bit before they finally stabilize. Additionally, one of these products might help a bit with staying in tune: http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_big_bends_nut_sauce_tuning_lubricant?full_sku=429800 http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=A94/513.0.56.22543.0.0.0 How long have you had this guitar?

| Something MUST be slipping - if your other strings are staying in tune then there's no other explanation. Is the string too tight in the nut slot? If it is then the tension may still be evening itself out after you've finished tuning (i.e. when you're playing). Try de-tensioning the string and taking it out of the slot... if the nut tries to hold on to the string then this could be the problem. Try lighter gauge strings or very carefuly widen the slot, (being careful not to make it deeper!) - or get a guitar tech to do it fo you.

| Bill's recent post in this other thread might help to shed a bit of light on this http://www.daddario.com/Discuss/Topic33059-10-1.aspxI will quote part of his post: Bill Christy Project (9/8/2007)
The "G" string from a engineering prospective was never intended to be an "unwound" string. When the trend was to play light & ultra light strings the unwound "G" just became the norm. Being unwound puts a lot of tensile strength instability into play, and that is why most of the time the "G" string is the one you find out of tune. A wound "G" on the other hand having the wrap is more stabile, it als lends a more resonance to the over all sound as well. The one thing you want to be mindful of is the "nut slot" should be widened (not deepened), this can be done with a V - shaped jewelers file. Perhaps using a string set with a wound G string would help you?

| Unwound G strings also break the most when stringing up with a new set.

| My 64' Melody Maker' G String had the same problem. Using a wound G worked great. Stayed in tune and perfect intonation.
