Member and founder of the 70's fusion band Weather Report has died today at age 75. The band at it's high point consisted of, Joe Zawinul {Keys, Synths, Piano}, Peter Erskine {Drums} , Wayne Shorter {SAX}, and The Late Great Jaco Pastorius{Fretless Bass}.

Known as the Fearsome Foursome, they stormed the 70's scene with a new sound, Rock and Jazz combined and sprouted many spinoff groups such as Return to Forever {Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke,  Lenny White, Al DiMeola, Flora Purim.}, John McLauglins Mahvishnu  Band, and others.

Zawinul, a musical monster was a virtuoso on his instrument dominated the style and was one of the firsts to utilize the polyphonic sounds into music. Now two members of this awesome jazz group are gone. I have to go listen to 8:30 now in his memory.  God Bless and R.I.P. Joe Zawinul.

To be honest, I know that they were very influencial in shaping a genre of music, but I don't know much about their particular body of work.

I know that last week, just about any media outlet you wanted to tune in had a 30 s clip of "Birdland" playing at some point in the day!

Hey - Where are we going?  And why am I in this handbasket?

Check out the "This Is Jazz Vol. 20" series. It has Jaco on the cover and is called Weather Report, The Jaco Years.

Give an ear to "River People, Teen Town, and Port of Entry".

They will blow you away!

I wasn't familiar with the artist or band.  The only one mentioned that I know by name is Jaco, and that's only because I recently became interested in fretless bass.  I'll check out this music, though!  If you find a video of theirs on YouTube or something, please post the link!  Thanks!

I'll check out YouTube, I never thought of that!

Thanks for mentioning it Dulch!

Videos of Weather Report and most Jazz Fusion bands in general are hard to come across.

I missed this sad news. He was an amazing player for sure. Boogie Woogie Waltz on Sweetnighter I think is as good as it gets. In fact I found it and am listening to it right now.

Billy, I don't mean to denigrate his, and Weather Report's, contribution, but I would argue that your statement:

... and sprouted many spinoff groups such as Return to Forever {Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Al DiMeola, Flora Purim.}, John McLauglins Mahvishnu Band, and others.

really applies to Miles Davis. Look at In A Silent Way and especially Bitches Brew .. Zawinul, Shorter, Corea, McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, and others. That was the birthplace of fusion if there ever was one.

You're Right!

How could I forget Miles?

One tune I always remember is New York Minute off of the Birth of Cool CD.

I stand Corrected!

P.S.  Is it me or does Wayne Shorter always look like he's getting pissed off at his saxophone?

I will miss the Fearsome Foursome though!
