To all bass and guitar players.

Do you play with a pick, or with your fingers and why do you prefer one over the other?

God wants spiritual fruit, not religous nuts!

Guitar (play often) - always with a good, thick Delrin pick.  Just can't seem to get anything done any other way.

Bass (play rarely, i. e. 3x/year) - prefer to play with my fingers, but with the amount I play that's not always practical.  The short answer is - play with my fingers til they are just too damned sore, then reluctantly switch to a pick til I heal up a bit.

Hey - Where are we going?  And why am I in this handbasket?

I go pick (preferably delrin) on my dulcimers, but occasionally do some finger-strum or bow work on it.

I rarely play guitar, but use picks on that when I do play it.

For bass, I get bad blisters since I pluck it weird.  After picking up a Planet Waves Insert Pick, I'm sold on those for bass.  It gives me the comfort of a pick, while giving the sound of finger-plucked strings.

It's got to be both!

And it's suprisingly easy to still hold a pick while picking with your fingers (if you know what I mean). I used to think it was a really cool trick when I saw others do this, but it's really not that difficult... just hold the pick with your 1st finger fully closed (like it's folded in two!) and pick with your 2nd 3rd and 4th fingers... then sliide the pick back into playing position with your thumb when you need it. The best of both worlds.
