Hi, I'm looking for information on the colour-coding used by D'Addario to indicate string gauge.  I have bought a second-hand cittern which is strung with the following strings - can anyone help me to identify their gauges?

Low C - Phosphor wound with Brass/Gold ball end (could it be .048w?)

G - Phosphor wound with Light Red ball end (could it be .040w?)

D - Phosphor wound with Grey/Black ball end (could it be .032w?)

A - Steel with Purple/Mauve ball end (could it be .016s?)

Top E - Steel with Silver ball end (could it be .013s?)

Grateful for any help on this - the strings appear new and I don't want to restring unnecessarily.

Mark

Welcome to the forums!

I'm not sure if the color coding can narrow in the gauge all that well.  There might be some sort of calipers that could measure the gauge fairly accurately.  This site might also be of some help:

What's the VSL of your instrument?  I'm not all that familiar with the cittern, and am not exactly sure what kind of strings go on it.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  I don't understand the term 'VSL', so I'll describe the instrument:

Freshwater 10-string bouzouki, scale 660mm, 5 courses of unison pairs tuned (deepest to highest) CGDAE.  Plays like a heavy-strung mandolin-cum-tenor mandola if capo'd at the 12th.

VSL is the scale length, measured from nut to bridge.
