| I've got a question about string tension across a set of strings. I'm looking at D'Addario EJ15's for my acoustic (Ibanez dreadnought). The string tensions for the set are:
E 16.2
B 17.8
G 27.9
D 27.1
A 25.4
E 20.7
Why do the G, D and A strings have so much more tension? Why don't they user thinner gauges for those strings, to make the tension more even from string to string? For example, D'Addario EXL110's are:
E 16.2
B 15.4
G 16.6
D 18.4
A 19.5
E 17.5
I think having as close to the same tension on each string makes a guitar much more playable. I'm thinking about buying individual strings to make up a set, just to see how it works. Any thoughts? |

| | Welcome to the forums! I'm with you on the string tension preferences! At this point, I do build custom string sets out of bulk D'Addario singles, simply to have uniform tension on all of my strings. (Plus D'Addario doesn't make sets of flat-wound dulcimer strings yet!) The only thing that I still buy sets for is for bass, and I'm really hoping that D'Addario makes a Chromes set for bass that has the high strings from the Light set and low strings from the Medium set. (They do this for some of their other bass string lines.) This would keep a uniform tension, and prevent some strings from being "floppier" then others. Definitely experiment with building your own custom sets!

This is the set that I wish could have the lower two strings blended in with the set above:
Am I going too thick for string gauges?

| | It's what you're comfortable with. The mediums are kind of stiff, not really for a flatwound rookie. The medium lights are fine, stick with them. I never used the super lights before until recently and I like these better than the regular lights. Only for flats though! Rounds, I'll stick to my XL 170 & 170-5's.

| | Thanks for the advice! I get a bit of a buzz at times on my two lower strings, especially the lowest. That's why I want something just a bit tighter there. My fingers are fine with tighter flat-wounds, as I use the rubberized Insert Pick for bass by Planet Waves. It's sweet!
