What string set does D'Addario recommend to tune a 4 string bass down to CGCG? More specifically, I have a Yamaha RBX170.

thank you!

It would take thicker strings, a bridge adjustment, and possibly some reinforcement on the neck.

Sorry I don't have any specifics.  My guess is that you'd need to buy single strings and experiment to find the right sizes needed.

hey rob

i play a yamaha rbx250f that came to me with a mismatched set of strings on it. this resulted in a slight corkscrew to the neck. I straightened the neck about 8 years ago ( a subject for another forum). ever since then, i have been pretty perticular about the strings i put on my instruments. about 2 years ago, i stumbled across daddario's string tension guide http://www.daddario.com/Resources/JDCDAD/images/tension_chart.pdf

brilliant.

from that point on, i have experimented without fear. i'm choosing the notes i want, then the strings available have the tension listed at that note. i usually pick strings that are within a range of about 5 lbs of pressure. and usually a little light (35-45 lbs) for the notes i'm tunning to.

the good stuff-
if i were going to get strings for c-g-c-g, i would get the following daddario strings:

xlb130 xlb085 xlb065 xlb045

you might need a slight truss rod and bridge hight adjustment.

Warning 1: string at your own risk

WARNING 2: DO NOT EVER tune this arrangement of strings to standard e-a-d-g, your bass will probably die. i mean it.

have fun.

thanks for the info, james! i'll definitely be taking it to the shop to get set up. we've got a great local luthier that does repairs, setups, & hotrods. i'll probably take it to that guy now that i have some info.

rock on!
