I forget the name of the company, but they sponsored a contest with Guitar Player.  You could enter to win one of their crazy-looking guitars, after participating in a poll on which of their designs looked the coolest.

if you buy a body blank from warmoth you can cut it however you want. that can be as "crazy custom" as you can afford. i say that because you have to paint it and buy pickups and hardware and the neck (also available from warmoth) and inffinitely many items but its do-able in under $3000 which for a custom isnt horribly expensive. but in general, its still a big investment
