| | If memory serves I played once on a kit similar to what you are showing. Arbiter Flats, spelling, interesting kit, not much projection, but a really neat single lug tuning system. My .02 |

| | I've played on a traps, good practice kit, don't sound terible, and from what i can tell, easy tear down. |

| i suppose it would be a nice practice kit since it's small and quiet(er) but i wouldn't want one of those to be honest!

| there's a bloke locally selling the arbiters for about $533... seems a good price. he said he used them for concerts before (i take it he meant gigs...). i didn't know you could use these for gigs!

| i had a listen to the arbiter drums online on their website and they actually sound quite decent! i was very surprised at the bass drum especially! the toms sounded quite dead though but maybe that's fixed with 1ply heads. i dunno.

| | The Arbiter Flats basically evolved into the Traps under the guidance of Bob Henrit, the well-known British drummer who worked for Arbiter starting in the 90s and later began rep-ing Traps. Apart from some design modifications, the main difference is that the Traps' bass drum has 2 heads for a little more oomph. I've played both - as much as is possible at NAMM - and they're very decent, particularly when mic'd. Of course the selling point is less about the sound than the convenience and size when packed. They're perfect for traveling on the subway or in a tiny car. I wouldn't take them on tour, but I'd love to have a set for rehearsals! There have been a few other attempts at shell-less drums, most notably the Flat Jacks in the '60/70s (well, they were almost shell-less...) and Purecussion's Headset in the '80s, which relied on Remo's PTS heads. when i first read the title i thought you were talking about something like this... Nice... you do know that's my snare, right? Marcus DeMowbray made that, a kit like that, and some other interesting shell-less drums. Photos and info at http://members.lycos.co.uk/mdemowbray/ Bermuda |
