I personally like the Ernie Ball 10's for my type of rock music however, you may consider a little heavier string if it will be played real agressively. More of the "Metal" sound will be coming from the proper amp and not the strings IMHO. Get to a dealer and run it by them. They can help.

If he plays metal and tunes down which is common in metal music it would be wize to use a heavier string.  I would recommend D'Addario XL 115.  These strings are 11 thru 49.  MOst players would use 10's (10 thru 46).  When tuning down ½ step the 10's get alittle sloppy, so I would go with 11's.  D'Addario offers this gauge in a couple of styles, but as I said before I would go with the XL115's.

 Its all about the tone.

Seeing how you came to the D'Addario Forum asking I would assume that you want D'Addario's, I would recommend XLs either 10-46 or 11-49

Try D'Addario's EXL115W string set. The third string is wound for better intonation.
