Hello guys and gals! I was hoping you would all offer your expertise with these sticks, if any. I realize they are lightweight wood, and probably prone to breaking easier. However, I’m really intrigued by the 7A and the Sweet Ride, anybody use these? Pros and cons? Thanks, Prank

BTW, fellow brush aficionados, just how good are the Vater Wire TAP brushes? I'm still going to get inserts for my Gauger brushes as long as they are available (Coiled Flairz and regular brush inserts, they are awesome!), but I want to try something else as well. Thanks for any and all input, Prank

Maple sticks are very light, and break very easily. If you play very lightly they might be just fine. If you dish out the volume like I do, they won't be much good. I stick to using hickory and sometimes my Easton Aheads. The Easton sticks are very comfortable to use and are ultra strong and light. If you buy some, make sure that you change the sleeves frequently, cus if a cymbal cuts through it and you contact the aluminum part of the stick to the cymbal, the stick will break immediately. I have an older set of Vater wire brushes and they have been decent. The retractable type are much more useful, IMHO.

I bought some Vic Firth maple sticks a few months ago and I didn't care for them. I was in a hurry and picked them up by accident. I was glad to return to the use of hickory again.

I'm using mostly maple sticks nowadays, especially the Regal 8A and 5A maples. They don't break as often as they CHIP. The tips on my 8As will often simply chip in half.

While searching for the right stick for me, I did happen to try various Vater models, and I must say, I am VERY pleased with their quality of construction and choice of woods. I found their maple and sugar maple sticks to be pretty tough and long-lasting.

But, I guess it really depends on your playing style. My friend Charles uses maple sticks, and he will usually wear through his at the shoulder (hi-hats), with a pair lasting 3-4 days. I'll usually destroy the tips on mine (bell of ride cymbal) and deeply dent the body just above where I hold the stick (rimshots), getting just a week outta one pair.

Most other people who are accustomed to hickory will break maple sticks clean in two within one sit-down UNTIL they learn to play lighter. (In other words, there is an adjustment period during which you will go through several pairs of maple sticks.) This just isn't economical for most people, with maple sticks at around $6 to $7 a pair at best.

Thanks guys! I'm going to get a pair each of the Vater models mentioned above, as I'm not really a hard hitter. I rarely break sticks, thank God, and can't even remember the last time I did. Now Hot Rods, that’s another story. They splinter and break like no ones business.

But my Regal Tip 7A's and Johnny Rabb Keltner sticks have never broken on me, as I can recall. I think it was a pair of 7A Pro Marks that broke within one playing many, years ago. That's the main reason I switched to Regal Tip.

Thanks again guys, and has anyone had any experience with the Vater Wire Tap brushes? Again, any and all thoughts, both pro and con, are welcome. Prank
