for supporting the Chinese economy.

This week's Frontline on PBS. Watch it. Tape it. When you're out of a job and sitting around the house doing nothing, pop that tape in and see the reason why.

Reminds me of a conversation you and I have had before, Bubba.

This is capitalism at work. The directors at Walmart are maximizing the company's income, which is their job. I don't think you can blame the communists.

I work at Wal Mart and I don't live in China. People who shop there are supporting people like me to.

That's a pity - you should try it some day. Working at Walmart and living in China is supposed to be really cool.

Of course not.  I blame our governments since Nixon, and especially Clinton, for giving the Chinese special trade favors, which allow them to produce so cheaply.

We sell them lumber that our government has subsidized the removal from our forests.  We sell them foodstuffs which are also subsidized to the large agri-business farms.  We don't require that their society worry about the damage that their industry does to their environment, and we don't worry about the health and welfare of the Chinese workers like we do our own.  You know, stuff like workman's comp, health insurance, OSHA and unions.

If you viewed the program, you would know that they work for 20 to 50 cents per hour, with none of the aforementioned bennies.  How can American workers compete with that?

Besides, their currency is undervalued by 40%, according to one source quoted in the program.  Since we import $36 billion dollars of Chinese goods through the port of Long Beach, California alone, and only export $3 billion dollars of American goods (mostly raw materials like cotton, scrap steel, lumber and foodstuffs) through that same port, if I may use Long Beach as a microcosm, then the balance of our trade, or 92% is for U.S. Treasury Bills which they hold as debt against our future.  (recently, I've been thinking that it would be a great trick to play on the commies to default on all that paper that they've been accumulating against us, but that would be dis-honorable.  Besides, our leaders aren't that smart.)

I'm not against trading with China, or any country.  But I am for FAIR trade.  They must internalize all costs of production, and we must not use government subsidies to produce the goods that we exchange in return.  Also, even when all of that is factored in, they would still enjoy a more favorable trading position in the short run, until all balances out in the long run.  Tariffs should be utilized to minimize that imbalance and slowly removed until we are at equilibrium.  If none of this is implemented, then it becomes obvious to me that the aim of this collusion between the Communist Chinese and our own Fabian elite is to down trod our own people into a third world populace as well.
