I'm sure it's a matter of preference, but I tried both and decided not to use the Fast Fret because I could tell it was penetrating my skin.  Everytime I used it I could taste the stuff within a few minutes!  I know that can't be good.

The Tone Fingerease has been around over thirty years and I have never heard of it drying out a fretboard.  I know guys with $5000 guitars that use the stuff way more than I ever would and none has ever had a problem.  Trick is go easy and wipe off any excess.  Be that as it may, if you prefer the Fast Fret (and I know many others do) go ahead and use it.  But if you develop nipples on your forehead or anything like that I hope you will post some pics!

I guess I'm the cheapest guy here.  I use a Viva paper towell to wipe down my strings, though I do use a Dean Markley microfibre cloth when I am polishing.

I'm pretty cheap about string maintenance. And lazy. I really don't do anything to my strings; I do tend to wash my hands before I practice (seems to wake 'em up, as well), and I'm lucky enough not to have inherited the acid sweat that drives my dad to buy two backup/replacement watchbands with his new watch.

I keep a yellow flannel cloth from AutoZone-- and a bottle of Fender polish-- to take care of fingerprints, smudges, and such.

I also use finger ease even on my Chafins. I also wipe the strings down in between sets and at the end of any playing session with a cloth dampened with regular lighter fluid.
