Kaplan Premium Rosin

As a general rule, start by applying 2–3 strokes of rosin to your bow before each practice session, then adjust as needed. If you're playing every day, a few light strokes should usually be enough, while occasional players may need to apply rosin less frequently. Without enough rosin, the bow hair will slide across the strings, making it difficult to produce a clear, consistent sound. Too much rosin, however, can produce a harsh sound and leave excess dust on your instrument. If your bow starts slipping or struggling to grip the strings, try adding another stroke or two. Over time, you'll get a better sense of how much rosin your bow needs.

Resin is the raw substance collected from trees and used to make traditional bow rosin. As the main ingredient, resin is mixed and heated to specification for varying colors and consistencies. The end result is rosin: the sticky substance that’s applied to the bow of an orchestral instrument. When you play, rosin creates the friction between the bow hair and strings needed to make the strings vibrate. Synthetic alternatives also exist, such as D’Addario Clarity Rosin, which is made from synthetic hydrocarbon resin rather than traditional pine resin.

D’Addario’s light rosin is harder and provides less grip, with a higher melting point, making it a good choice for violin and viola players or for use during the summer months. Meanwhile, cello players may prefer D’Addario’s dark rosin, as it’s softer and provides more grip, making it easier to play heavier strings. However, you shouldn’t choose a rosin based on color alone, since hardness can vary between formulas and manufacturers.

from your bow. For violin and viola players, D’Addario Kaplan Light Rosin is a harder rosin that provides less grip, making it a good choice for lighter strings and warmer weather. For cello and double bass players, D’Addario Kaplan Dark Rosin is softer and provides more grip, which can help with heavier strings. D’Addario also offers Clarity Hypoallergenic Rosin for players seeking a synthetic alternative to traditional pine-based rosin. Ultimately, the best choice comes down to your instrument, playing conditions, and personal preference.
