Yuma Uesaka

Yuma Uesaka is a New York City-based, Japanese-American saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and improviser based in New York City who explores the worlds of jazz, improvised music, and modern composition. He utilizes everything from extended techniques, electronics, and experimental performance practices to continually expand the possibilities of woodwind instruments, all while balancing improvisation with composition. Collaboration is central to his work, with projects ranging from an acclaimed duo with NEA Jazz Master Marilyn Crispell to co-led ensembles including Ocelot and Tropos. He’s shared stages with artists like Anna Webber, Mary Halvorson, David Virelles, and Lesley Mok, and his original music has been presented at venues ranging from the Roulette to the National Sawdust, The Jazz Gallery, and more. He is recognized by the ASCAP Foundation and named a 2025 DownBeat Rising Star on both clarinet and soprano saxophone.
