Mats Gustafsson

Swedish saxophonist, composer, and improviser Mats Gustafsson has spent more than 40 years mastering everything from sopranino to contrabass saxophone. He moves between free jazz, noise, rock, electronic music, and interdisciplinary art, both solo and through projects including FIRE!, FIRE! Orchestra, The Thing, and GUSH. He’s played more than 3,500 concerts and has participated in over 250 recording projects, all while racking up high profile collaborations with artists including Sonic Youth, Neneh Cherry, Thurston Moore, Merzbow, Peter Brötzmann, Derek Bailey, Roscoe Mitchell, and Moor Mother. He is a recipient of the Nordic Council Music Prize and the Swedish Royal Academy of Music’s Large Prize of Jazz.
