Playback String Recycling

The World’s Leading String Recycling Program

Who's This For?

Public String Recycling Centers are locations where consumers can bring their used strings for recycling. This often includes retail stores, educational institutions, and other places open to the public. As a Public String Recycling Center, D'Addario will include your location on our Recycling Center Map, so individuals looking to recycle can find your location.

If you do not want to be listed publicly for individuals seeking a string recycling center, please select “Become a Private Recycling Center” above.

How It Works

D'Addario will provide a designated Playback bin* to be set up inside your facility. You will be responsible for periodically shipping the collected strings (free of charge) to TerraCycle® to be recycled.

How to Become a Public String Recycling Center

Did you know that musical instruments are not recycled through municipal recycling programs? It is estimated that more than 1.5 million lbs. of instrument string metal could be put into landfills every year. That's equal to 3.3 Statues of Liberty.

Our goal is to help facilitate 100% recycling and upcycling strings to minimize not just our own impact, but our entire industry’s.

About Playback

After decades of pioneering efforts in sustainability, we took our environmental commitment to the next level. We created Playback so you can send in used guitar and orchestral strings. Once collected, the metal and nylon strings are separated by type and the metal is melted down and smelted into new metal alloys. The nylon is recycled into industrial plastic applications. This program is currently open to residents living in the continental US.

About TerraCycle

PLAYBACK is powered by TerraCycle, an international upcycling and recycling company that repurposes waste into new, innovative materials and products. TerraCycle is a company that aligns with our mission of creating positive social change while minimizing our carbon footprint. With its global capabilities, TerraCycle helps us turn waste into worth. Participation in the TerraCycle program is free, and the number of people who can join is limited.
