Some players think a guitar string is “balanced” when it’s tuned up and tightly hovering across the length of the fretboard. In this guide, we’ll clarify what balanced tension really is and why it matters for your playing experience.

What is Balanced Tension?

Balanced tension strings are a D’Addario innovation where the tension of each of the six strings in the set is engineered to be as close to equal as possible. Traditionally, the tension of each string varies from string to string, making some strings feel “looser” than others, even when they’re tuned properly. But in a balanced tension set, the tension of each of the six strings is almost identical to one another.

Why Use Balanced Tension Strings?

With our balanced tension strings, mathematically equalized resistance delivers comparable feel from string to string. In simpler terms, the feel of picking any string, from the low E string to the high E string, is very similar. Some players really enjoy this since the consistent feel can deliver improved dynamic control.

Do Balanced Tension Strings Have Different Gauges?

Very slightly. Our balanced tension sets are based on traditional gauges but optimized to balance the tension for a similar feel between strings. This means the gauge of each string in the set is either the same as the corresponding original set, or very slightly varied.
