What snare batter head should I choose?

We have a variety of options to suit every drummer! A great starting point would be to know the diameter of your drum. Not all EVANS Drumheads come in all sizes, so you’ll want to start there.

In general, if you prefer a brighter, more resonant snare drum sound, go with a 1-ply drumhead like G1, G12, Genera, or UV1. If you prefer a darker tone, increased attack, and shorter sustain, a 2-ply drumhead like G2, UV2, ST, or HD Dry is your best bet.

You should also consider durability. Typically, 2-ply drumheads will provide more durability and lifespan than 1-ply heads. Consider selecting 2-ply drumheads for heavier playing styles, or for rehearsal studios where the drum set will be played often. UV2, ST, EC Reverse Dot, and Heavyweight Dry are designed to provide maximum longevity.

Why are snare drumheads coated?

The practice of coating drumheads has existed since the invention of the synthetic “all-weather” drumhead by Chick Evans in 1956. The textured coating is ideal for jazz drummers who use brushes, allowing the sound of the brushstrokes to project further in concert situations. Coating also adds mass to the drumhead, which helps dampen some overtones and create a more “focused” sound.

Can I use a clear/uncoated batter drumhead on my snare drum?

Sure! While this is not the standard practice, many snare drums sound great with a clear batter head. The resulting sound will be brighter and rich with overtones compared to a coated head, but playing with brushes won’t be as effective.

We don’t recommend using a snare side head on the batter side, due to the thinness of the film.

Do I need to “seat” or “break-in” the drumhead?

What is the difference between regular coating and UV coating?

Regular spray coating has been the standard practice since the invention of the synthetic “all-weather” drumhead by Chick Evans in 1956. Most coatings are a textured, water-based solution that damps some overtones and provides a great solution for using brushes. All our non-UV coated heads use spray coating.

However, in 2016, EVANS developed a new paradigm in coated drumheads. Our patented UV coating is not a spray, but an ink cured under a powerful UV light. The result is a coating that’s even more durable than spray coating, but less dense, allowing the head to vibrate more. The coating is consistently even and resistant to wear, with a texture that is similar to spray coating. That makes it ideal for brushes and alternative sound sources.

If you want a versatile drumhead, and you prefer the look and feel of a coated head but desire a more open and resonant sound or if you are seeking a coating that lasts longer, try UV1 or UV2!

I noticed that there are some drumheads that appear on both the snare batter page and tom batter page. Are they different?

What are “dry” drumheads?

EVANS offers a few drumheads with small pinholes drilled around the edge of the playing surface. These are known as “dry vents” and they allow air to escape the inside of the drum more quickly, resulting in a slightly shorter sustain and a more “equalized” sound quality (without sacrificing any of the durability). Drumheads with dry vents are great for live performances but really excel in recording studios under microphones.

Examples of dry drumheads include these models: Genera Dry, HD Dry, ST Dry, Heavyweight Dry.

What is a “control ring”?

Some drumheads have a permanently built-in film ring in the hoop on the underside of the drumhead. This is known as the “control ring” and it is designed to reduce some stray overtones and help the user tune the drum more quickly.

Examples of drumheads with control rings are: Genera, Genera Dry, HD, and HD Dry.

What is “SST”?

What is the difference between “Power Center” and “Reverse Dot”?

Some drumheads have a thin film adhered to the topside or underside of the drumhead to focus the tone and greatly increase durability. By placing the dot on the underside of the drumhead, you get the same amount of impact resistance as if it were placed on top, but it doesn’t get in the way when playing with brushes.

Power Center and Power Center Reverse Dot use a classic, clear 5mil center dot. EC Reverse Dot, UV1 Reverse Dot, Heavyweight, and Heavyweight Dry use an advanced vented 3mil dot that provides more flex and a unique, futuristic aesthetic.

What are Strata drumheads?

What is the difference between the Hybrid drum set snare head and the Hybrid marching snare head?

B14MHG is the drum set version of this head, and it features a frost coating that works with brushes. SB14MHG is the marching version, which features an uncoated film laminate above the high-tensile fibers. We don’t recommend using the marching version on drum set, and vice versa.

B14MHG requires a significant amount of tension to tune properly. With that, we recommend using it on metal snare drums.
