What tom batter head should I choose?

We have a variety of tom batter head options to suit every drummer! A great starting point would be to know the diameter of your drums. Not all EVANS Drumheads come in all sizes, so you’ll want to start there.

In general, if you prefer a brighter, more resonant tom sound with increased sustain, go with a 1-ply drumhead like G1, G12, or UV1. If you prefer a darker tone, increased attack, and shorter sustain, a 2-ply drumhead like G2, EC2S, or UV2 is your best bet.

Clear drumheads offer the most definition, clarity, and attack, while coated and frosted heads have fewer overtones and a more focused sound. The textured coating is ideal for brushes.

You should also consider durability. Typically, 2-ply drumheads will provide more durability and lifespan than 1-ply options, making them ideal for heavier playing styles, or for rehearsal studios where the drum set will be played often.

What is the difference between clear/coated tom batter drumheads?

Clear tom drumheads offer the most definition, clarity, and attack. The film resonates freely and often provides more overtones and volume compared to their coated counterparts.

Coated and Frosted drumheads have fewer overtones, leading to a warmer tone, shortened sustain, and softer attack. The textured coating is ideal for brushes.

Our patented UV coated drumheads fall somewhere in between. The coating is less dense than spray coating, allowing the film to vibrate more like a clear head but with the ability to use brushes. UV1 and UV2 are highly durable and versatile!

Do I need to “seat” or “break-in” the drumhead?

What is the difference between regular coating and UV coating?

Regular spray coating has been the standard practice since the invention of the synthetic “all-weather” drumhead by Chick Evans in 1956. Most coatings are a textured, water-based solution that damps some overtones and provides a great solution for using brushes. All our non-UV coated heads use spray coating.

However, in 2016, EVANS developed a new paradigm in coated drumheads. Our patented UV coating is not a spray, but an ink cured under a powerful UV light. The result is a coating that’s even more durable than spray coating, but less dense, allowing the head to vibrate more. The coating is consistently even and resistant to wear, with a texture that is similar to spray coating. That makes it ideal for brushes and alternative sound sources.

I noticed that there are some drumheads that appear on both the tom batter page and snare batter page. Are they different?

What is “SST”?

Sound-Shaping Technology is an EVANS innovation used on EC (Edge Control) drumheads, such as EC2S and EC Reso. The overtone control that’s applied to the circumference of the playing surface helps to pre-EQ the tone of the drum, removing muddy mid-range overtones.

The EC2S Clear is revered by rock and metal drummers for its projection and lively tone, while the EC2S Frosted is coated for warmth.

What is a Hydraulic drumhead?

Hydraulic drumheads are a classic EVANS innovation, first designed in the 1970s. They’re 2-ply drumheads that have a layer of oil in between the plies, resulting in strong overtone reduction and providing a “thud” sound, reminiscent of classic rock records.

Highly durable and famously easy to tune, Hydraulic drumheads are a great option for recording studios, drums that are challenging to tune, or advancing drummers still learning how to tune their drums.

They are also available in clear, black, red, and blue!

What is the difference between Onyx and Black Chrome drumheads?

Onyx drumheads feature two plies of 7.5mil film, which is then frost coated for warmth, focus, and a matte black appearance. Onyx drumheads have a defined attack, short sustain, and a dark tone.

Black Chrome is an uncoated 2-ply drumhead made with a 7mil clear film over a 7.5mil black film, which has a glossy mirror-like appearance. These heads have a lively attack, medium-short sustain, and a dark tone with added projection.

What is the difference between G1, G2, and G12?

In the case of G1 and G2, the number refers to the plies (G1 is a 1-ply 10mil drumhead, whereas G2 is a 2-ply drumhead where each ply is 7mil).

With G12, the number does not refer to the number of plies, but rather the thickness of the film (the head is one ply of 12mil film).

If you prefer the tone and feel of a 1-ply drumhead and the enhanced durability of a 2-ply drumhead, G12 heads might be the perfect choice.
