About Mandolin Strings

Mandolin strings are made like most any other string—with core and wrap wire. D’Addario mandolin strings use our one-of-a-kind hexagonally shaped high carbon steel core wire. The shape helps to secure the outer wrap wire to the core, maintaining tone and tuning stability.

Are Mandolin Strings the Same as Guitar Strings?

Many mandolin strings use common alloys that you may also find on guitar strings. We offer Phosphor Bronze, Monel, Nickel Bronze, 80/20 Bronze, and Nickel-Plated. Also like our guitar strings, we offer mandolin strings which are coated. XT coated mandolin strings provide extended life with a natural feel, while XS coated offer maximum life with a smooth feel. Both will give mandolin strings a longer life span.

What Are the Best Sounding Mandolin Strings?

The best sounding mandolin strings are the ones that you like the best. Tone varies with different wrap wire, but which wrap wire alloy sounds the best to you is subjective. It’s a great idea to try a few sets and choose your favorite.
