Snare Batter Marching Drumheads

Marching snare batter heads are built specifically for marching percussion. They’re highly durable, built to project, and engineered to withstand much higher tuning and heavier playing than standard drumheads.

Marching snare batter heads are durable and built for high tensions and projection. Your choice will come down to the feel and sound you prefer, as well as the type of ensemble you play in. Drum corps and marching band applications share many of the same needs, while pipe band drumming is a different playing style with its own specialized heads.

While all EAVANS marching snare drumheads are designed for high-tension drums and are constructed using high-tensile fibers, System Blue is a 12mil head available only in grey, with a slightly more forgiving feel in the hands compared to Hybrid. Meanwhile, Hybrid heads are available in White, Grey, and Black and are about 2mil thicker than System Blue. Both are built for indoor and outdoor marching applications.

How frequently you replace marching snare heads depends on rehearsal schedules, performance demands, and how intensely you play. If your head has lost its responsiveness, can’t hold tuning, or shows visible signs of wear, swap it out.

Most marching heads settle in pretty quickly after they’re installed. After a short period of playing and a few tuning adjustments, they'll stabilize and deliver the consistent performance you’re looking for.

Installing the head properly, tuning it evenly, and avoiding unnecessary over-tensioning all help maximize drumhead life. Regularly check tension and store the drums in stable environmental conditions to help preserve consistent performance all season long.

All EVANS marching heads work well for both indoor percussion, marching band, and drum corps. However, System Blue is a great choice that offers a lot of sound control in echoey indoor with a lot of natural reverb. Meanwhile, MX5 snare side heads can help control sustain for better articulation and proper note translation to the audience.

Not all Pipe Band snare manufacturers use the same 14" head sizes, so double check to make sure you choose the right version for your drum. The PB-SB1A Oversized 14" head is made for Premier Pipe Band snares, including HTS models, while the PB-SB1B Standard 14" fits standard-size Pipe Band snares from brands like Andante and Pearl. If you’re not sure which one you need, check the drum manufacturer’s specifications before placing an order.

The MX5 uses a laminated aramid fiber and an overtone control ring for a highly articulate sound. The MS5 uses the same construction, but without control ring for more snare response. Meanwhile, the Hybrid Snare Side achieves the sensitivity of polyester film with the stretchy resistance of aramid fiber by embedding the fibers between two ultra-thin layers of clear film. Lastly, the, the MS3 uses a clear film with an overtone control ring for a classic corps sound.
