It depends on the instrument you play and how often you play it. Generally speaking, student violin and viola players should change their strings at least once a year, while student cello and double bass players can go about two years between changes. Professional violin and viola players may change strings 3 to 6 times per year, cello players 2–3 times per year, and double bass players 1–2 times per year. Regardless, if your strings ever start to sound dull, become difficult to tune, or show visible wear, you need a fresh set.

Different instruments require different strings, designed specifically for their size and tuning. Violin strings are the shortest, thinnest, and highest pitched. Double bass strings are on the opposite end of the spectrum: long, thick, and low pitched.

It’s best to start by identifying your playing level as well as the sound and playing characteristics you’re looking for. Beginners should look for high-quality affordable strings like Prelude and Ascente, while experienced players should find the right pairing for their unique instrument. Different string sets offer different combinations of core and wrap material, with various levels of warmth, brilliance, projection, response, and feel. The right set depends on your instrument and your style of choice.

Even a little routine maintenance can go a long way towards maximizing string life. Wiping your strings down with the Micro-Fiber Polishing Cloth after each playing session removes rosin, sweat, and oils that build up over time and corrode the strings. Then, make sure you store your instrument in a stable environment whenever you're not playing. Those are two simple ways to get the most out of every set of strings. Adding a humidity regulating device to your case, such as a Humidipak, can also help to keep your instrument in proper condition when it’s in storage.

New strings usually take a little bit of time to properly settle and stabilize after they’re installed. The exact break-in period varies by string construction and the habits and style of the player. But in general, solid and stranded steel core strings break in faster than synthetic core strings. Certain synthetic core strings, such as Kaplan, do have a shorter break in period than others. Try to just play and tune normally until they settle into their optimal sound and response.

There are several possible reasons. A dip in tuning stability is actually surprisingly normal with new strings, as they need some time to settle. But other factors, like old or well-worn strings, slipping pegs, changes in humidity, or bridge movement can also impact this. If tuning issues persist after your strings have settled, it never hurts to get your instrument inspected by a qualified luthier.

Beyond a good set of strings, a few essentials can make playing and instrument care much easier. A quality rosin, reliable tuner, microfiber polishing cloth, performance mute like the Spector Mute, and a humidification system like Humidipak can all help keep your instrument in great playing condition.

If a new set of strings doesn’t refresh your sound, something has gone wrong. Strings play a major role in shaping your instrument's voice, influencing everything from the warmth and projection to responsiveness and articulation. Different sets have different core and wrap materials, which all produce unique sounds. That leads to variations in warmth, brilliance, projection, response, and feel. The right set depends on your instrument and your style of choice. Many musicians combine strings from different sets, sometimes with different tensions, to fine-tune the balance, response, and tone of their instrument, particularly when choosing an E string.
