Humidity related issues are the number one cause of instrument repairs. For a guitar, drying out may result in neck bow, a sunken top, a lifted bridge, cracks, or changes in tone. However, proper humidification can prevent these and many other problems by assuring the wood of an instrument doesn’t lose its moisture.
That’s why D’Addario makes a variety of products that are effective at keeping instruments humidified. Among the more popular options are Humidipaks, which automatically achieve and maintain the optimal humidity level, and sponge humidifiers, which are low-cost but require frequent refills.
Humidipak works by automatically releasing or absorbing moisture as needed to maintain the ideal humidity level for your guitar, completely removing the guesswork from humidification. Humidipak works well for acoustic or electric guitars when placed inside a closed case.
If your instrument is dry and needs to be returned to the proper relative humidity level (45%-50%) Humidipak Restore will get it there. If your instrument is already at 45%-50% relative humidity, Humidipak Maintain will sustain this level inside your case. To achieve or maintain the correct relative humidity, Humidipaks should be replaced when the packet begins to feel hard, or every six months, whichever comes first.
As long as you continue to wet the sponge regularly, Sponge Humidifiers release moisture slowly and evenly, until your instrument gets to the ideal relative humidity—just be sure to use a Hygrometer to measure the humidity level in your instrument’s case. We offer a few varieties of sponge humidifiers, designed for different instruments. One of our favorites is the Soundhole Humidifier, which fits snugly into your acoustic’s soundhole. When using a soundhole humidifier, your acoustic guitar should remain within a closed case for best results.
